What Is Lyssin

Some remedies in homeopathy are made from plants. Others from minerals.
And then there are the ones made from the disease itself—called nosodes.

One of the most important nosodes I use in my practice, especially for behavioral or neurological shifts, is Lyssinum—also called Lyssin or Hydrophobinum. It's made from the saliva of a rabid dog—but before you raise an eyebrow, stick with me. What this remedy offers is powerful, gentle, and incredibly important for the dogs we love.

What Is Lyssin?

Lyssin is a homeopathic nosode made from the diluted and potentized saliva of a rabid dog.

Yes, it’s true. But before that sounds alarming, let’s clarify something important:
Homeopathic preparations are diluted hundreds, even thousands of times—so much so that there’s no measurable trace of the original substance left. What remains is the energetic imprint, not the physical material.

So no, Lyssin cannot cause rabies. Not even remotely.

Instead, it's used to help relieve symptoms that mirror those seen in rabies, such as:

  • Extreme fear or anxiety

  • Restlessness or pacing

  • Unusual aggression

  • Hypersensitivity to water, sound, or touch

  • Seizures or neurological tics

  • Behavior changes post-vaccine

Why Use Lyssin After a Rabies Vaccine?

Many of us have seen it—
A sweet, easy-going dog gets their required rabies vaccine...
And suddenly, something shifts.

Sometimes it’s immediate. Other times it takes days, weeks, or even months before you notice:

  • A new fear of strangers

  • Sudden separation anxiety

  • Startling easily

  • Reactivity or unexplained aggression

  • Obsessive behaviors or neurological symptoms

This is what we call vaccinosis—a term used in homeopathy to describe energetic disturbances or adverse reactions following vaccination.

Lyssin is one of the most commonly used remedies to support detox and energetic reset following the rabies vaccine. It’s not a “cure” for rabies or an antidote to the vaccine itself—but it may help the body and mind find balance again when symptoms appear after a rabies shot.

When Do I Use It in My Practice?

As a holistic pet health coach and behavior consultant, I often see dogs with emotional and behavioral struggles that trace back to something that changed—and in many cases, that “something” turns out to be a vaccine.

Here’s what I look for:

  • A sudden behavior change within a few weeks or months of a rabies shot

  • A dog who becomes fearful, reactive, or overstimulated seemingly “out of the blue”

  • New-onset seizures or nervous system symptoms

  • Chronic anxiety or aggression that doesn't respond to training alone

If we suspect a connection to the rabies vaccine—even if it was a year ago—we may try a Lyssin protocol. And I can tell you, in many cases, we’ve seen significant improvements.

Sometimes, Lyssin helps clear the static so the dog can regulate their nervous system again. Other times, it opens the door for deeper healing with additional remedies, essential oils, or nutritional shifts.

Can It Be Used Proactively?

Yes. In some cases, we use Lyssin preventatively—administered at the time of the rabies vaccine or shortly afterward to help the body process the energetic stress of vaccination.

It's especially helpful for sensitive dogs, dogs with a history of vaccine reactions, or breeds prone to neurological conditions or anxiety.

Top 5 Things to Know About Lyssin

  • It’s a nosode, made from rabies virus—but it’s completely non-toxic in homeopathic form

  • Used to address behavior and neurological shifts after rabies vaccination

  • Safe even when used a year or more after the vaccine

  • Works best when part of a personalized detox or behavioral reset plan

  • May be used proactively at the time of vaccination for sensitive dogs
