Dr. Ruth Roberts Products, CrockPet Diet & Pet Health Coaching

Dr. Ruth Roberts is one of the veterinarians whose work has had a direct influence on how I approach nutrition and whole-dog wellness. I completed her Certified Holistic Pet Health Coach program, trained in her CrockPet feeding model, and continue to use a number of the products and nutritional tools available through her practice.

For dog parents, there are really three different reasons I send people in Dr. Ruth's direction: gently cooked food through The Original CrockPet Diet, targeted supplements and wellness products, and professional education through her Holistic Pet Health Coach certification program.

The Original CrockPet Diet: Gently Cooked Food You Can Customize

The Original CrockPet Diet is Dr. Ruth Roberts' gently cooked, home-prepared feeding protocol for dogs and cats. This is one of the reasons I recommend her work so often: CrockPet gives us a structured fresh-food foundation without pretending that every dog needs exactly the same bowl.

I can coach you through the CrockPet feeding protocol and customize it for your dog.

You do not have to buy the CrockPet information, look at a recipe and then wonder whether you are doing it correctly. As a Certified Holistic Pet Health Coach and canine nutritionist trained in the CrockPet model, I can help you use that foundation and make appropriate adjustments based on your individual dog.

What CrockPet Coaching With Me Can Include

  • Choosing proteins your dog tolerates and enjoys
  • Adjusting vegetables and other whole-food ingredients
  • Working around food sensitivities and intolerances
  • Considering digestion, stool quality, appetite and reflux
  • Adjusting the diet for senior dogs and changing calorie needs
  • Supporting healthy weight and lean muscle
  • Considering kidney or liver concerns when appropriate
  • Using TCVM food energetics when they are useful for the individual dog
  • Reviewing supplements needed to complete the feeding plan
  • Changing the plan when your dog's needs change

The CrockPet framework is useful because it is customizable. A senior dog losing muscle does not automatically need the same version as an itchy dog with food sensitivities, a dog with digestive problems, or a dog whose kidney values are beginning to change.

We start with the gently cooked feeding model and then build the food plan around your dog.

This is not chicken-and-rice-with-a-multivitamin homemade feeding. A home-prepared diet still has to account for calcium, iodine, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and the nutritional needs of the individual dog.

Holistic Total Body Support & CrockPet

Holistic Total Body Support is one of the Dr. Ruth Roberts products I recommend most often, and it is commonly used alongside The Original CrockPet Diet.

It is a daily powdered multivitamin and glandular formula for dogs and cats. The current formula includes methylated folate, chelated minerals, active B-vitamin forms, vitamin E tocotrienols and pasture-raised organ and glandular ingredients.

Within a CrockPet-style plan, Total Body Support helps provide many of the micronutrients that are difficult to reliably supply through muscle meat and vegetables alone.

But I do not treat Total Body Support as permission to freestyle any homemade recipe. Calcium, iodine, fatty acids and other nutrient requirements still have to make sense for the food being fed. Dr. Ruth's own CrockPet kits pair Total Body Support with calcium and an iodine source for that reason.

Dr. Ruth Roberts Products I Commonly Recommend

Nutrition

Holistic Total Body Support

A daily multivitamin and glandular blend for dogs and cats that provides vitamins, minerals and organ-derived nutritional support. This is one of the products I commonly use with gently cooked and home-prepared food, including the CrockPet feeding model.

Related topics: homemade dog food, CrockPet, vitamin and mineral support, senior dogs, thyroid and whole-body nutrition.
Sensitive Dogs

Daily Wellness Formula

A glandular-free multivitamin developed for dogs and cats that do not tolerate beef, pork or organ-derived ingredients. It provides many of the same upgraded nutrient forms used in Total Body Support without the glandular component.

Worth considering when a dog's food trial or sensitivity history makes glandular ingredients problematic.
Allergies

Hista Paws

A quercetin and nettle formula commonly used to support dogs and cats during seasonal or environmental challenges. I may consider it as one piece of an allergy-support plan, particularly when histamine response, itching or environmental triggers are part of the picture.

Hista Paws does not replace figuring out why the dog is itchy. Food, gut health, yeast, fleas, environmental exposure and other triggers still deserve attention.
Mobility

Arthri-Pawz

A joint-support formula for dogs and cats built around ingredients including glucosamine. Current Dr. Ruth Roberts mobility combinations may also incorporate ingredients such as UC-II collagen and hyaluronic acid to support joint flexibility and comfort.

Related topics: arthritis, senior dogs, stiffness, joint support and mobility.
Omega-3

Omega Pawz

A liquid marine omega-3 product providing EPA and DHA in triglyceride form. Omega-3s can be useful for skin and coat, joints, cardiovascular health, brain health and maintaining a healthy inflammatory response.

The amount of EPA + DHA matters more to me than simply seeing "fish oil" on the front of a bottle.
Testing

Glacier Peak Pet Intolerance Test

Glacier Peak Holistics' Pet Wellness Life Stress Scan uses hair and saliva with biofeedback technology to screen food and environmental factors that may be worth investigating.

This is not an IgE allergy test, DNA test or veterinary diagnosis. I use intolerance information as another clue — not as permission to eliminate half the grocery store forever.
Fresh Food

The Original CrockPet Diet

Dr. Ruth's gently cooked whole-food feeding system with recipes and educational materials for home-prepared feeding. Versions and adjustments are available for different nutritional and health needs.

This is the program I can help you implement and customize rather than leaving you to interpret the recipes by yourself.

Dr. Ruth Roberts' Holistic Pet Health Coach Certification

Products are only part of why Dr. Ruth Roberts appears on The Well Oiled K9.

I am also a graduate of her Holistic Pet Health Coach Certification Program.

The program is designed for pet parents and pet professionals who want structured education in whole-pet wellness. The current curriculum includes nutrition, The Original CrockPet Diet, functional and integrative health concepts, Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine concepts, supplement planning, client coaching, case work and business development.

That certification became one layer of my own professional education. I already had years of dog training, behavior and canine nutrition experience when I took it, and I have continued adding education since. But it helped give me a broader framework for looking at the dog rather than treating food, digestion, inflammation, medications, behavior and aging as completely separate subjects.

Thinking About Becoming a Holistic Pet Health Coach?

I wrote a separate guide specifically about the career and certification because that question deserves more than a paragraph on a product page.

I explain what a holistic pet health coach actually does, what the certification covers, what it does not qualify you to do, how I use the education in my own work, and what I would consider before spending the money.

Why I Recommend Some Dr. Ruth Products — But Not Automatically All of Them

Dr. Ruth's online store has grown substantially and now carries products from a number of companies in addition to her own formulas.

That does not mean every dog needs everything in the store.

I may love Total Body Support for one dog and choose the glandular-free Daily Wellness Formula for another. One itchy dog may benefit from Hista Paws while another needs us to stop shopping for allergy supplements and figure out what is happening in the gut or food bowl. Arthri-Pawz may be useful for mobility, but muscle loss, excess weight, pain, footing and activity still need attention.

Products are tools. The goal is to choose the tools that make sense for the dog standing in front of us.
