🥩 What Is a Balanced Meal for Dogs?
A balanced meal means your dog is getting:
All essential nutrients: protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals
In the right ratios for their age, activity level, and health status
Absorbable forms of nutrients (bioavailable, not just present)
Safe levels — not too much of certain vitamins (like D or A), and not too little of things like calcium or B vitamins
Balance isn’t just about having meat and veggies in a bowl. It's about the right kinds of meat, fat, organ, calcium, fiber, and functional ingredients like seeds or herbs — all working together to support the whole body.
In this module — we are looking to balance the batch which is why we have been specific in the ratios, supplement amounts etc.
As we move through the course and discuss customization, RAW, etc we’ll better understand how to balance those as well.
📆 Balance Over Time vs. Every Bowl
We aim for balance over the week, not perfection in every meal. This is where some of our toppers come in.
Why?
Because that's how wild dogs eat. They don’t get the “perfect meal” every day — they eat variety, and their body balances it out across several days.
One day might be heavy in red meat.
Another day, they get bone.
Another day, more liver or fish.
The total nutrient profile across the week is what matters most.
And this makes it easier for you too. No need to be a mad scientist every time you fill their bowl.
🔁 Why Ingredient Rotation Leads to Better Balance
Rotating proteins, vegetables, fats, and functional foods (like seeds, herbs, or fermented foods) helps you:
Cover more nutrient bases — different proteins offer different amino acid profiles and minerals
Avoid overexposure to any one ingredient — especially important with food sensitivities or allergies
Support gut health — variety feeds diverse microbes in the microbiome
Provide a more interesting bowl — mental enrichment matters too
Think of it like this: you wouldn’t eat chicken, white rice, and broccoli every day for life and expect to thrive. Same goes for your dog.
🧠 Final Thought
Balance isn’t a formula.
It’s a strategy.
One that’s flexible, intuitive, and grounded in whole foods — not synthetic powders or lab-created kibble logic.
If you feed real, rotating ingredients with the right foundation (protein, organ, bone/calcium, fiber, fat), you're already on the path to balance. The rest? We tweak as needed.
