How a Remedy Is Made
How Homeopathic Remedies Are Made
Learning Objective: By the end of this lesson, pet parents will understand how homeopathic remedies are prepared, why dilution does not mean “nothing is in it,” and what makes these natural medicines so gentle and effective—even for sensitive or elderly dogs.
What Are Homeopathic Remedies Made From?
Homeopathic remedies can be made from almost anything in nature, including:
Plants (e.g., Arnica montana, Chamomilla)
Minerals (e.g., Sulphur, Natrum muriaticum)
Animals or animal substances (e.g., Apis mellifica from the honeybee)
Diseased tissue or secretions (called “nosodes”)
Healthy tissue or immune material (called “sarcodes”)
But here’s the key: Homeopathy doesn’t use the raw form of these substances. Instead, they go through a very specific process that changes how they act in the body…
The Process: Potentization
Homeopathic remedies are prepared through a method called potentization, which involves serial dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking). Let’s break that down:
Step 1: Mother Tincture
The original substance is extracted into alcohol and water, creating what’s called the mother tincture.
This may be a liquid form of a plant, mineral powder suspended in alcohol, or an animal product processed into a safe form.
Step 2: Dilution
A small amount of the mother tincture is diluted in a measured ratio—typically 1:10 (X or D scale) or 1:100 (C scale).
For example, 1 drop of tincture into 99 drops of alcohol = 1C potency.
Step 3: Succussion
The mixture is shaken vigorously by hand or machine—this is succussion.
It’s not just mixing—this step is believed to imprint the energetic information of the original substance into the solution.
Step 4: Repeat
This dilution and succussion process is repeated multiple times.
A 30C remedy has gone through 30 rounds of 1:100 dilution and succussion.
Each step increases the potency of the remedy while reducing the material substance.
“Wait—Isn’t It Just Water?”
This is a common question. By 12C, there’s essentially no measurable molecule of the original substance left.
And that’s exactly the point.
Homeopathy is based on the principle of energy and resonance, not material dose. The body doesn’t need more “stuff”—it needs the right signal to restore balance.
Think of it like:
A tuning fork that vibrates at the same frequency as an out-of-tune piano string.
It gently encourages the body to come back into alignment, rather than forcing it or masking symptoms.
What This Means for Dogs
Homeopathic remedies are:
Extremely gentle – Safe for newborn puppies, seniors, and sensitive dogs
Non-toxic – No risk of chemical overdose
Fast-acting – Especially in acute conditions like bee stings, injuries, fear/anxiety, or vomiting
Energetically matched – The more accurate the match between remedy and symptoms, the more powerful the effect
Real-World Example: Arnica montana
Original Form: A mountain daisy known to cause bruising and swelling if handled raw
Homeopathic Form: When prepared via potentization, Arnica becomes one of the most used first-aid remedies for trauma, bruises, post-surgery healing, or even fear of touch.
How It’s Delivered
Most remedies are:
In tiny sugar pellets (the remedy is sprayed onto the pellets)
Stored in amber bottles to protect potency
Also available in liquid form for faster absorption
You only need 2–3 pellets per dose, and they’re not dosed by weight—so a Chihuahua and a Great Dane get the same dose.
Summary: The Magic in the Method
It’s not just “natural” because it came from a plant—it’s the process of potentization that makes homeopathy unique and effective:
It transforms a substance from physical to energetic
It removes toxicity while enhancing healing potential
It makes remedies safe for all life stages—even those with liver, kidney, or digestive sensitivities
