What Is Ghee

The Benefits of Ghee

I often recommend to my Volhard Clients and those making homemade dog food to add Ghee to the diet when the protein is extremely low-fat.

Ghee is a clarified butter — it’s a saturated fat. Cow’s milk is boiled & the milk solids are then strained out. What’s left is rich in vitamins, antioxidants and healthy fat. Fats are important in the dog’s diet and may help your dog metabolize vitamins and minerals better.

Ghee contains no lactose, sugar or casein. This means Ghee is beneficial to dogs who may have difficulty with dairy products.

Ghee is rich in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Research shows that may offer benefits in these areas:

  • Digestion — reduction in inflammation , reduces risk of leaky gut by strengthening the intestinal wall

  • Shiny Coat, Healthy Skin. Ghee can even be applied topically to ease skin irritation & reduce inflammation. It can be the base of a good paw moisturizer or carrier for your essential oils.

  • Immune Health — rich in vitamin A (antioxidant)

  • Brain Health & Cognitive functions, even vision

Healthy bones & joints. Ghee is high in Vitamin K2 and promotes absorption of calcium.

When adding to your dog’s food, it doesn’t take much and it not needed every day, if you already have sufficient fats in your dog’s protein source. If your protein is low fat, you may wish to rotate Ghee with other fats throughout the week.

As an “additive” to your dog’s supplementation or what I like to call bonuses in the bowl 1/4 - 1tsp once or twice a week depending on the size of your dog is a good starting point.

Ghee can be used prior to a highly demanding excursion or performance activity for added energy.

Ghee can be used on your fasting day as a boost of energy and sustenance.

Ghee can be beneficial to our senior dogs who need a little extra oomph in their energy.

If your dog is prone to pancreatic issues, requiring low fat diets — this may not be the right supplement to consider for your dog.
