We Feed Raw is one of the commercial raw-food companies I like for dog parents who want to feed real raw food without sourcing muscle meat, organs, bone and micronutrients themselves.
The frozen foods arrive ready to thaw and serve.
No grinding organs. No calculating bone. No freezer full of individually sourced ingredients.
That's a very useful option for people who want raw feeding to be simple and nutritionally complete.
But there is still one question We Feed Raw cannot answer from a quiz:
Which food actually fits your dog?
I like raw feeding. I like convenient raw feeding even better when it helps more dog parents get fresh food into the bowl. I still choose the food based on the dog — not the feeding philosophy.
It removes much of the work that scares people away from raw feeding.
Raw feeding can be incredibly simple once you understand it. Getting there is where people tend to become overwhelmed.
We Feed Raw gives dog parents a commercially prepared option that is already formulated to be nutritionally complete rather than asking a beginner to build an 80/10/5/5 diet and then figure out the remaining nutritional gaps.
Complete & balanced
The frozen recipes are formulated to meet AAFCO nutritional standards for dogs of all life stages, including growth of large-breed puppies.
PhD formulated
We Feed Raw says its recipes were formulated by a PhD animal nutritionist with decades of experience.
Real animal ingredients
The frozen foods are built largely from muscle meat, organ meat and finely ground bone.
Ready to thaw & feed
The food arrives frozen and portioned, which eliminates much of the sourcing and preparation required for DIY raw.
Cold-pressure safety step
We Feed Raw uses a cold-pressure process intended to reduce harmful pathogens while avoiding high-temperature cooking.
Protein choice
Multiple animal-protein recipes give us room to choose based on food history, digestion, allergies, fat tolerance and preference.
We Feed Raw does use a vitamin and mineral premix.
My older page described We Feed Raw as containing no synthetic vitamin pack.
That is not accurate for the current frozen recipes.
Current ingredient lists include a vitamin and mineral mix along with ingredients such as kelp and, depending on the formula, other nutritional additions.
I don't consider that a reason to reject the food.
In fact, one reason the meals can be sold as complete and balanced across life stages is that nutrient levels are being deliberately formulated rather than assuming muscle meat, organ and bone alone will cover every requirement.
My preference is always accurate information over making a food sound more “natural” than its current ingredient panel actually is.
The protein name on the front does not always tell you every animal protein inside.
This becomes especially important when you're choosing food for an itchy, food-sensitive dog.
Beef
We Feed Raw's current beef formula is one of its single-animal-protein recipes.
It uses beef muscle and organ ingredients, beef bone and the nutritional additions needed to complete the formulation.
Dana's Take: Beef can be a useful protein when the dog tolerates it, but it is not automatically hypoallergenic simply because it is single-protein.
Turkey
Turkey is another current single-animal-protein frozen recipe.
The animal ingredients are turkey rather than a hidden combination of poultry species.
Dana's Take: This can be a particularly useful commercial-raw choice when I want to move away from chicken and the dog's food history suggests turkey may be appropriate.
Chicken
Chicken is also a true single-animal-protein We Feed Raw recipe.
Dana's Take: I would not make this my first choice for a chronically itchy, inflamed or food-sensitive dog when I have other suitable options.
If your dog thrives on chicken and shows no reason for me to remove it, that's a different conversation.
But I don't choose chicken simply because it is usually the cheapest protein in the box.
Duck
The current Duck Recipe is not duck-only.
It also contains turkey ingredients, including turkey gizzards, turkey tails and turkey liver.
Dana's Take: This may be a lovely food for many dogs.
It is not the food I would use if I am deliberately trying to test duck as one isolated protein.
Lamb
The current Lamb Recipe also contains beef ingredients.
Dana's Take: Again, nothing inherently wrong with that.
But if you're buying “lamb” because you're trying to avoid beef, the ingredient panel changes the decision entirely.
Venison
We Feed Raw currently offers a venison recipe made with grass-fed Australian venison.
It also contains beef heart, beef liver, beef kidney and beef bone.
Dana's Take: Venison may still be a useful component of the diet.
But this is absolutely not a venison-only elimination-diet food.
“Novel protein” only works if we know what is actually in the food.
This is one of the things that sends dog moms in circles.
The front says duck. They think they're feeding duck. But the dog is also getting turkey.
The front says lamb. But beef is in the recipe too.
This isn't sneaky ingredient labeling — We Feed Raw publishes the ingredients.
You simply have to read them.
We Feed Raw now gives you both options.
The company's traditional product is its frozen raw food.
It now also sells shelf-stable freeze-dried raw food in beef and chicken.
Frozen Raw
Frozen recipes are thawed and served and currently meet AAFCO nutritional standards for all life stages, including growth of large-breed puppies.
Freeze-Dried Raw
Beef and chicken freeze-dried foods offer a shelf-stable option for travel, convenience or homes without enough freezer space. The current freeze-dried foods are formulated for adult dogs.
For me, frozen is usually the obvious choice when practical because you get the convenience of a prepared raw diet while retaining the natural moisture of the food.
Freeze-dried becomes particularly useful for travel, emergencies, boarding, backup food or dogs whose families simply cannot manage frozen delivery.
Commercial raw and grocery-store meat are not exactly the same conversation.
Raw food requires sensible handling.
We Feed Raw says its meals are produced using USDA human-grade meats in a USDA-certified facility and uses a cold-pressure processing step intended to reduce potentially harmful pathogens without cooking the food.
That safety process is one reason a commercial raw food can be easier for a beginner than simply buying ground meat at the grocery store and calling it a raw diet.
You should still:
Keep it cold
Store frozen food appropriately and thaw it safely.
Wash your hands
Treat raw pet food with the same basic hygiene you use for raw meat in your own kitchen.
Clean bowls & surfaces
Don't leave raw residue sitting on counters, cutting boards or bowls.
Consider the household
Immunocompromised people and medically vulnerable household members may require additional food-safety considerations.
AAFCO-complete tells us the food can meet nutrient requirements. It doesn't tell us whether it's right for your dog.
That's an important distinction.
A food can be beautifully formulated and still be the wrong choice for one specific dog.
Age alone is not a reason to stop feeding raw.
A healthy older dog who still loves raw food, digests it beautifully and maintains good body condition may continue to do very well with it.
I don't automatically move a dog to cooked food because the birthday number changed.
But I do pay attention if the senior:
Stops wanting cold food
Some older dogs become much more interested in warm, aromatic meals.
Changes digestion
Stool, nausea, reflux or appetite may tell us the digestive picture has changed.
Loses muscle
I want to protect calories and high-quality protein rather than simply feeding less because the dog is older.
I care more about the dog in front of me than remaining loyal to raw, cooked or any other feeding label.
This is actually where I think the company makes the most sense.
If someone tells me:
“I want to feed raw but I have no interest in figuring out organs, bone, calcium, trace minerals and thirty pounds of freezer inventory,”
I'm not going to tell them they have failed the raw-feeding purity test.
A nutritionally complete commercial raw food can be an excellent way to improve the bowl without making feeding your dog a second job.
If your dog doesn't do well on it, pay attention.
I like raw food.
I am not going to tell you to keep feeding a diet your dog clearly doesn't tolerate because “dogs are supposed to eat raw.”
If your dog develops:
- persistent diarrhea;
- repeated vomiting or nausea;
- significant reflux;
- poor appetite;
- continued weight loss;
- worsening skin or ears;
- pain after meals; or
- another significant change after switching foods,
we investigate.
Maybe the protein is wrong. Maybe the fat is wrong. Maybe the transition was too fast. Maybe the dog has an underlying GI or pancreatic problem. Maybe gently cooked food is simply a better fit.
The goal is not to win at raw feeding. The goal is to feed the dog well.
Follow the problem beyond the food company.
Let's make sure you're improving the diet instead of rebuilding it on top of itself.
This happens all the time.
Someone feeds a complete commercial raw food and then adds:
multivitamin + calcium + kelp + liver + organ powder + omega + mushrooms + joint powder + probiotics + whatever TikTok recommended yesterday.
Now the food is balanced — and the additions may not be.
A supplement review lets us look at the whole bowl instead of judging every product individually.
