What Is SPM

You ever have one of those moments where someone mentions something and you’re like…

“Wait… what is that?”

That was me this week.

A friend mentioned a product with SPMs… and my first thought was
“Okay… I don’t love recommending things I haven’t personally looked into.”

So… true to form… I went down the rabbit hole.

Because that’s what we do, right?
We learn something new… we look at it from every angle… and then we decide if it actually deserves a place in what we’re doing for our dogs.

So What Are SPMs?

SPM stands for Specialized Pro-Resolving Mediators.

And I’ll be honest — the name sounds way more complicated than it needs to be.

Here’s the simple version:

These are compounds your dog’s body is supposed to make naturally… mostly from omega-3 fatty acids.

But instead of just “reducing inflammation”…
they help the body finish the job.

Think of inflammation like this…

  • The body creates inflammation for a reason

  • But it also needs a signal to say… “okay, we’re done here”

SPMs are part of that “we’re done here” signal.

Why This Actually Matters

This is the piece that made me pause and pay attention.

It’s not inflammation itself that causes most long-term problems…

It’s inflammation that never fully resolves.

And when that happens, we start seeing things like:

  • Dogs that stay itchy no matter what you try

  • Joints that never quite bounce back

  • Gut issues that linger

  • Slower healing after injury or surgery

  • That general “something’s off” feeling in senior dogs

That’s where SPMs come in.

They’re not trying to shut inflammation down completely…
they’re helping the body wrap it up and move on.

But Here’s the Catch

SPMs are made from omega-3s…

First, I find that most people are NOT giving their dog enough Omega 3, but we also have to understand that not every dog is good at converting omega-3s into SPMs.

Dogs dealing with:

  • Chronic inflammation

  • Gut issues

  • Poor diet history

  • Aging systems

…they’re often the ones who need SPMs the most — and are the least efficient at making them.

So even if you’re already using fish oil…
you might not be getting the full benefit.

So What Do These Supplements Do?

Instead of hoping the body makes enough…

SPM supplements provide them already active and ready to go.

Which means:

  • Faster support

  • Less reliance on the body figuring it out

  • More targeted help in stubborn cases

That’s what caught my attention.

Where I See This Most Effective

This isn’t something I’d run out and give every dog.

But I can absolutely see it being helpful for:

  • Dogs stuck in chronic inflammation cycles

  • Seniors who just aren’t recovering like they used to

  • Skin cases that won’t fully clear

  • Post-injury or surgery support

  • Chronic Arthritis and Joint Health issues.

  • Dogs who haven’t responded well to omega-3s alone

Basically… the dogs where you’ve already been doing the work
and you need another layer of support.

What About Costs

I was told this stuff was expensive…

And yeah — some of it is.

But rhere are great options on places like Fullscript that are actually pretty reasonable compared to what I expected.

Still… I’m always going to say this:

If we’re adding something in,
there needs to be a reason.

Not just “because it’s trending.”

My Honest Take After Looking Into It

I like it.

Not as a first step.
Not as a replacement for the basics.

But as a targeted tool when things aren’t fully resolving.

It fits into how I already approach things:

Layered
Intentional
Supporting the body instead of forcing it

And those are the tools I tend to keep.

Top 5 Things I’d Look At Before Adding SPMs

  • Is your dog dealing with ongoing, unresolved inflammation?

  • Are you already supporting with omega-3s… and not seeing results?

  • How’s the diet looking — are we still feeding inflammation?

  • Is the gut actually supported? (this one matters more than most people think)

  • Are detox pathways open and working?

If those pieces aren’t there yet…
that’s where I’d start.

If You’re Sitting There Wondering “Should I Try This?”

That’s where having a second set of eyes helps.

Because this is one of those tools that can be really helpful…
or just another bottle on the shelf.
