Does My Dog Need the Lepto Vaccine?
What Is Leptospirosis
Lepto
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that affects people and animals. It can pass from animals to humans when an unhealed break in the skin comes in contact with water or soil where animal urine is present.

The Truth About the Lepto Vaccine
Leptospirosis is a hot button topic in the vet world, and it can leave dog moms feeling pressured. Let’s look at what’s really going on.
Most dogs exposed to lepto (and even Lyme) never get seriously sick — their bodies handle it with little to no symptoms.
When illness does occur, it’s often because of a poor immune response, not simply the exposure.
The current vaccine only protects against 4 strains, even though there are many different variations of the bacteria.
Protection is estimated around 80%, and immunity may wear off before the full year is up.
Side effects are not uncommon and can include lameness, anaphylaxis, kidney failure, even cancer or death.
This vaccine is not approved for people because of its risks, including increased likelihood of auto-immune issues.
Human cases in the U.S. are rare — only around 100 are reported each year.
World-renowned immunologist Dr. Ron Schultz and my late colleague Dr. Patricia Jordan called the fear of lepto “leptomania.”
How Dogs Get Lepto
Dogs usually pick it up by sniffing or walking through contaminated urine in water, soil, or food. The incubation period is 2–14 days, and infections can range from mild to severe. In the rare severe case, lepto may cause acute liver or kidney failure, anemia, or even death.
Cats are less likely to develop illness but can still shed the bacteria.
Should My Dog Get the Vaccine?
Technically, this vaccine is considered optional. Only you can weigh your dog’s lifestyle and environment against the risks.
Here are a few things I remind my clients:
If caught early, leptospirosis is generally very treatable.
Strong immune systems, healthy diets, and natural antibacterial support (like certain essential oils) can give your dog a powerful layer of defense.
If you do choose to vaccinate, never give the lepto shot at the same time as another vaccine. Separate them by at least 2 weeks, and follow with a detox protocol to help the body recover.
With my own dogs, I focus on keeping immunity strong through seasonal cleanses, detox work, and proactive wellness routines. That’s what keeps them thriving year after year — and I do the same for myself.
