What Is A Tincture

What Is a Homeopathic Tincture?

A homeopathic tincture, also called a mother tincture, is a concentrated herbal extract made by soaking plant, mineral, or animal material in a solution of alcohol and water. This extract is the base substance used to begin the homeopathic dilution and potentization process.

Think of it like this:

  • In herbalism, tinctures are used directly as medicine.

  • In homeopathy, tinctures are transformed through dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking) to create remedies like Arnica 30C or Nux vomica 6X.

Are Tinctures The Same as Homeopathic Remedies?

No.

  • A tincture is the undiluted, chemically active extract.

  • A homeopathic remedy is a diluted and potentized version — designed to work energetically, not chemically.

So while both may come from the same original plant (like Belladonna or Chamomilla), they work very differently.

Can You Use Tinctures for Dogs?

Yes — but read the labels

Some Tinctures contain alcohol and are not the same as homeopathic pellets or liquids/wet dosing. In herbal medicine, alcohol-free glycerites are sometimes used instead for dogs. A small bit of alcohol isn’t necessarily bad for dogs when used for acute issues – but depending on the issues there may be better choices.

However:

  • True homeopathy uses potentized dilutions, not tinctures.

  • Tinctures should not be called “homeopathic” unless they’ve gone through the potentization process.
