Homeopathy Basics

How It Works, How Remedies Are Made, and How to Use Them Safely

If you’ve spent any time in holistic pet health circles, you’ve probably heard about homeopathy… and maybe felt a little confused by it.

It doesn’t behave like herbs.
It doesn’t behave like supplements.
It doesn’t behave like essential oils.
And it definitely doesn’t behave like medications.

But when it’s used correctly, it can be one of the most powerful tools in your toolkit—especially for emotional patterns, chronic issues, and those “nothing else is working” cases.

The easist use for pet parents is in the first aid situation.

Let’s walk through this in a way that actually makes sense… without overcomplicating it.

What Homeopathy Actually Is

Homeopathy is an energetic system of medicine based on one core principle:

“Like supports like.”

A substance that can create symptoms in a healthy body…
can support the body in resolving those same symptoms when given in a highly diluted, energized form.

This isn’t about suppressing symptoms.

It’s about stimulating the body to respond differently.

That’s a big mindset shift.

Instead of asking:

  • “What stops the symptom?”

We ask:

  • “What matches the symptom pattern?”

How Homeopathic Remedies Are Made

This is where most people either lean in… or completely check out.

So let’s keep it simple. (go through the remedies class for more info)

Homeopathic remedies go through two main processes:

Dilution

The original substance (plant, mineral, or animal-based) is diluted repeatedly in water or alcohol.

Succussion

After each dilution, the solution is vigorously shaken.

Not gently. Not casually.
We’re talking intentional, rhythmic impact.

This process is believed to:

  • Transfer the energetic imprint of the substance

  • Remove the physical toxicity

  • Enhance the bioenergetic signal

By the time you get to common potencies (like 6c, 30c, etc.), there is little to no measurable physical substance left.

And yet… the effect can be very real.

That’s the part that throws people.

Understanding Potencies (Without Getting Lost in It)

You’ll typically see remedies labeled like:

  • 6c

  • 30c

  • 200c

Here’s the practical way to think about it:

  • Lower potencies (6c, 12c)

    • More physical-level support

    • Gentler, often used more frequently

  • Mid-range (30c)

    • The “go-to” for most home use

    • Works on both physical and emotional patterns

  • Higher potencies (200c and above)

    • Deeper, more energetic impact

    • Used less frequently

    • Requires more precise remedy matching

For most dog moms working at home…
30c is your sweet spot.

How Remedies Are Selected (This Is Where It Gets Interesting)

Homeopathy is not symptom-based in the way most people expect.

Two dogs can have the same diagnosis
and need completely different remedies.

Why?

Because we’re looking at the pattern, not just the label.

That includes:

Physical presentation

  • What do you actually see happening in the body?

Emotional state

  • Fearful? Irritable? Shut down? Clingy?

Triggers

  • What makes it worse or better?

Timing

  • Morning? Night? After eating? During storms?

Personality

  • This matters more than most people realize

Example

Two dogs with anxiety:

  • One is panicked, restless, pacing, can’t settle

  • One is frozen, withdrawn, shuts down completely

Same “issue” on paper…
completely different energetic patterns.

Different remedies.

How Homeopathy Is Dosed

This is where people tend to overthink it… or overdo it.

Let’s simplify.

General Home Use Guidelines

  • Use 2–3 pellets per dose

  • Place:

    • Directly in the mouth

    • Or dissolve in a small amount of water

  • Avoid handling pellets excessively (use cap if possible)

Frequency Depends on the Situation

• Acute situations (injury, sudden stress, reaction)

  • Every 15–30 minutes for a few doses

  • Then reassess

• Ongoing or chronic patterns

  • Once daily or a few times per week

  • Watch the response before repeating

The Golden Rule

Don’t keep dosing if improvement is happening.

More is not better here.

Homeopathy works by prompting a response…
not by forcing one.

What a Good Response Looks Like

This part matters more than most people realize.

You’re not just looking for symptoms to disappear instantly.

You’re looking for shifts like:

  • Improved mood or relaxation

  • Better sleep

  • More engagement

  • Symptoms softening or changing

Sometimes symptoms:

  • Move

  • Change slightly

  • Improve in waves

That’s often part of the process.

When Homeopathy Is a Great Fit

Homeopathy shines in areas like:

  • Emotional and behavioral patterns

  • Trauma (recent or old)

  • Skin issues

  • Digestive imbalance

  • Immune support

  • Recovery after illness or stress

It’s also one of my go-to tools when:

  • A dog is sensitive to supplements

  • Nothing else seems to “stick”

  • The issue feels layered or complex

Where It Has Limits

Let’s be real for a second.

Homeopathy is not a replacement for:

  • Emergency veterinary care

  • Surgery when it’s clearly needed

  • Diagnostics

It works best as part of a bigger plan that includes:

  • Nutrition

  • Nervous system support

  • Detox pathways

  • Environment

The Biggest Mistakes I See

If you’re going to use homeopathy… avoid these:

  • Giving multiple remedies at once “just in case”

  • Repeating doses too frequently

  • Choosing remedies based only on diagnosis

  • Not observing the dog’s response

  • Expecting instant suppression instead of gradual shift

How This Fits Into a Real Plan

Homeopathy is one piece of a much bigger picture.

When I’m working with clients, we’re layering:

  • Nutrition changes

  • Nervous system regulation

  • Essential oils

  • Detox support

  • Behavioral work

And then using homeopathy to:

  • Shift patterns

  • Support the body’s response

  • Move things forward when stuck

Want Help Choosing the Right Remedy?

This is where most pet parents get stuck… and honestly, it makes sense.

Picking the right remedy is more about pattern recognition than memorization.
