Yunnan Baiyao
Yunnan Baiyao for Dogs: What You Need to Know
Yunnan Baiyao is a traditional Chinese herbal formula with a long history of use to support the body’s natural ability to manage bleeding, circulation, and tissue repair. Originally developed in Yunnan, China, this formula is most widely recognized for its internal and external support during trauma, surgery, and acute bleeding episodes — including use in both human and veterinary medicine.
I’ve used Yunnan Baiyao in my own practice and with client dogs when there's concern about internal bleeding, slow clotting, or post-surgical support. Many holistic vets rely on this as a “go-to” formula in emergency kits — and I keep it on hand for the same reasons.
What the Brand Says About Itself
Rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and used for over 100 years
Supports blood circulation and healthy clotting response
May be recommended by veterinarians for dogs with bleeding tumors (like hemangiosarcoma), dental extractions, or injuries
Each capsule bottle includes a single red pill — traditionally reserved for emergency or serious trauma use
Why I Recommend It
I don’t reach for Yunnan Baiyao every day — but when you need it, you really want to have it on hand.
It can be part of an at-home emergency protocol for trauma, injuries, or spontaneous bleeds
May be recommended before and after surgeries to support the body’s natural healing response
Can support healthy function in conditions where internal bleeding is a concern — though always under the guidance of a holistic vet
It’s one of the few herbal formulas that has found acceptance in both conventional and integrative veterinary settings — and that says something.
How to Use It
Use always depends on the reason for administration:
Emergency Use: At the first sign of trauma or bleeding — such as a cut, wound, or internal concern
Pre/Post Surgery: Start a few days before and continue after, based on vet guidance
Chronic Conditions: Some holistic vets use it short-term with dogs experiencing internal bleeds (i.e. ruptured tumors) — but this should be part of a broader plan
Each bottle usually contains several capsules and one red emergency pill. That red pill is traditionally used for serious trauma only — talk to your vet or holistic practitioner before use.
Important Considerations
Do not use long-term without supervision — it’s best suited for short-term or as-needed use
Avoid in pregnant dogs
Watch for any signs of sensitivity, and always consult a practitioner if using with other herbs or medications
