K9 Coach Carolinas

Dog Behavior Is About More Than Obedience.

K9 Coach is evolving. My work today is focused less on traditional obedience training and more on helping dogs whose behavior is connected to fear, anxiety, trauma, transitions, emotional stress, aggression, recovery and changes in their physical or emotional health.

K9 Coach Has Changed.

For many years, K9 Coach included traditional training, obedience work and behavior modification. But the dogs coming through my door increasingly needed something deeper than another command, another correction or another round of basic training.

I was seeing dogs struggling after trauma. Dogs whose anxiety had suddenly intensified. Dogs becoming reactive or aggressive as they aged. Dogs recovering from illness, surgery, pain or major life changes. Rescue dogs learning how to feel safe. Senior dogs whose behavior was changing along with their bodies and brains.

Those cases require us to ask a different question: Why is this dog behaving this way?

That intersection of behavior, emotional wellness, nervous-system health, nutrition, pain, physiology and the dog's lived experience is now a major part of my work through The Well Oiled K9.

What I Help With Today

This is not a traditional obedience-training program. My work is best suited to dogs whose behavior requires us to look beyond sit, stay and heel and understand what may be driving the behavior underneath.

Anxiety & Fear

Chronic anxiety, environmental fears, hypervigilance, separation-related distress, shutdown, insecurity and dogs who simply struggle to settle or feel safe.

Aggression & Reactivity

Helping identify patterns, triggers, stressors and contributing factors while developing safer, more realistic ways to work with the dog in front of us.

Trauma & Recovery

Support for dogs recovering from frightening experiences, shelter stays, abandonment, medical procedures, accidents, prolonged stress or other events that have changed how they respond to the world.

Life Transitions

Moving, adoption, rehoming, loss of another animal or family member, household changes, aging, illness and other major transitions that can affect behavior and emotional stability.

Behavior Changes With Age or Illness

New irritability, nighttime behavior, restlessness, sensitivity, confusion, startling, withdrawal or aggression can sometimes accompany physical or neurological changes and deserve a broader evaluation.

Nervous-System & Emotional Support

Looking at the dog's whole picture — including environment, stress load, routines, nutrition, physical comfort, enrichment and emotional state — rather than treating behavior as an isolated problem.

What I Am Not Offering

I am no longer positioning K9 Coach as a general obedience-training business. I am not offering basic puppy classes, routine obedience packages or traditional “sit, stay, come, heel” training as a standalone service.

If your primary goal is basic obedience training, a qualified local reward-based trainer may be a better fit. If your dog's behavior involves fear, trauma, anxiety, aggression, reactivity, recovery, unusual behavior changes or a more complicated emotional or physical picture, that is where my work may be appropriate.

The Dog in Front of You Matters.

Behavior does not exist in a vacuum. Pain can change behavior. Chronic inflammation can change behavior. Poor sleep can change behavior. Neurological changes can change behavior. Fear can change behavior. Hormonal changes, illness, medications, digestive discomfort, aging and previous experiences can all influence what we see.

Training may still be part of the answer, but sometimes training is only one piece. My approach is to look at the pattern, the dog, the environment and the possible emotional and physical contributors before deciding what the dog actually needs.

  • Fear and insecurity
  • Leash reactivity
  • Dog-to-dog conflict
  • Resource guarding
  • Human-directed aggression
  • Separation-related distress
  • Rescue and shelter decompression
  • Trauma recovery
  • Post-surgical or medical recovery
  • Senior behavior changes
  • Environmental sensitivity
  • Sudden changes in temperament
