The Risks Associated With Zenrelia

When your dog is miserable—itchy, inflamed, uncomfortable—I get the urge to grab something that works fast.

But here’s the part most people aren’t told…

Not all “relief” is actually helping your dog heal.

And Zenrelia falls into that category.

🚩 The Black Box Warning (This Matters)

Zenrelia carries a black box warning—the most serious warning the FDA gives.

That’s not just a label…
That’s a pause and think twice moment.

These warnings exist because real risks showed up in studies—not hypotheticals.

🧬 It Shuts Down the Immune System

Zenrelia is a JAK inhibitor, meaning it blocks parts of your dog’s immune response.

Yes… that can reduce itching.

But it also means:

  • Lowered ability to fight infections

  • Increased risk of illness

  • Reports of tumor development (both benign and malignant) in studies

So while the skin may look better… the internal terrain may be getting weaker.

💉 Risks Compounded With Vaccines

This is one of the biggest red flags.

Dogs on Zenrelia:

  • Can have inadequate response to vaccines

  • Are at risk for serious or even fatal reactions with modified live vaccines

Because of this, there’s a recommended gap of:

  • 28 days to 3 months BEFORE vaccines

  • At least 28 days AFTER vaccines

That’s a pretty big disruption to normal care… and a big risk window.

🤢 Side Effects Aren’t Rare

Reported issues include:

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Lethargy

  • Behavioral changes

And when you step back and look at it…
You’re often adding more problems while trying to manage itching.

❌ It Doesn’t Fix the Root Cause

This is the part I care about most.

Allergies don’t just “happen.”

They’re usually tied to:

  • Gut imbalance

  • Immune dysregulation

  • Environmental load

  • Detox pathways not keeping up

Zenrelia doesn’t touch any of that.

It just suppressses the symptoms — and introduce more risks.

And when the symptoms go quiet… the root issue often goes deeper.

🌿 What I Focus on Instead

If you’ve followed me for a while, you already know where I go with this…

We build the dog back up.

  • Fresh, species-appropriate nutrition

  • Gut support (this is huge for allergy dogs)

  • Functional support using herbs, essential oils, and foundational nutrients

  • Lowering toxic load in the home and environment

  • Supporting detox pathways so the body can actually clear what’s bothering it

That’s how you get real change—not just temporary relief.

🐾 And Yes… This Applies to Apoquel & Cytopoint Too

Different delivery… same core issue:

👉 Symptom suppression
👉 Immune interference
👉 Root cause untouched

I’ve helped a lot of dogs transition off these—and thrive.

So if you’re feeling stuck, you’re not alone in this.

Let’s Do This Differently

If your dog is dealing with allergies, there is another path.

One that doesn’t rely on shutting the body down to get relief.
