I’m Not Anti-Vaccine — But I Am Anti Over-Vaccination

Let’s be clear — I fully support responsible, thoughtful use of vaccines for dogs. Parvo and Distemper are dangerous diseases, and the vaccines are effective at providing protection.

But the conversation shouldn’t end there. Just because a vaccine worked once doesn’t mean we need to keep repeating it year after year. Over-vaccination comes with real risks — especially for sensitive dogs — and thankfully, we now have the tools to make smarter decisions.

Parvo: Core Vaccine with Long-Lasting Immunity

Parvovirus is a highly contagious, potentially deadly disease — and yes, puppies need this vaccine. A properly timed series is critical, especially with the final booster given after 16 weeks of age when maternal antibodies have faded.

But here's the part most pet parents aren’t told:
Once immunity is established, it often lasts for years — sometimes for life.

A simple titer test can measure your dog’s immunity and tell you whether another booster is truly needed.

Vaccine Shedding

Did you know your dog may shed the parvo vaccine for up to 28 days after receiving it? That’s because most parvo vaccines are made from modified live virus (MLV) — which means:

The vaccine virus can be shed through stool
Immunocompromised dogs or puppies in your home may be at risk
You’ll need to use extra caution with cleanup and interactions during that time

This is one more reason we don’t want to re-vaccinate if it’s not necessary.

Distemper: Another Critical Puppy Vaccine

Canine distemper is a serious viral disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. It’s a miserable illness — and the vaccine is highly effective at preventing it.

Just like with Parvo, the distemper vaccine is crucial in the puppy series, especially if your dog is at risk of exposure. But again — once your dog has had that full series and a follow-up booster after 16 weeks, the likelihood that they need additional doses is low.

How Long Does Immunity Last?

Multiple studies have shown that distemper immunity can last 5–7 years or longer — sometimes even for life. And that’s where titers come in.

A distemper titer checks your dog’s antibody levels to confirm they’re still protected. It’s a simple blood test — and far more informative than just defaulting to another vaccine.

Titer Testing: The Smarter, Safer Approach

Titer tests are available for both parvo and distemper. They’re affordable, accessible, and scientifically valid.

They help us:

Avoid unnecessary immune stimulation
Reduce the risk of vaccine reactions or long-term inflammation
Make individualized wellness decisions for each dog

So before you agree to another booster “just because it’s on the schedule,” ask your vet if a titer test is an option.

Vaccinate your puppy — with guidance and proper timing. See the Suggested Vaccine Schedule
After the 16-week booster, consider running titers instead of automatic annual shots
Ask your vet to provide the vaccine insert and explain potential side effects
If you have immunocompromised pets, be aware of vaccine shedding periods
