Does your Dog Need a Joint Supplement?

If you ask me, YES! , and so do you.

So let’s get proactive as possible.

When do you start your joint supplements?

Generally speaking at maturity. That’s around 18 to 24 months, and then for life. But at minimum, every senior dog should include joint supplements in the diet. Senior status can vary by breed, but large dogs are generally considered senior at 6-7 years of age, and small dogs around 10 years.

If you have a dog breed prone to joint health issues — you should likely start your supplementation at around 6 - 8 months.

If you wait until you see symptoms — you have likely waited too long as the damage has already started to occur. With many stoic dogs, they won’t show any signs of discomfort until it’s pretty bad.

If you do see symptoms get started as soon as possible, and please don’t stop supplementation. Your dog’s comfort level will be not be maintained if you go off the supplements. You can consider rotating a couple of brand options, but it’s generally not necessary once you find good relief for your dog.

Maintaining Joint Health For Dogs:

  • Fresh Food Diet — AntiInflammatory

  • Omega 3! It’s been shown to offer great benefits and an alternative to NSAIDS.

    • If you are still a kibble feeder, you’ll most likely need to supplement the Omega 3’s as you won’t find sufficient amounts in processed foods. Nor in the synthetic additives often used by commercial manufacturers of kibble.

If you are feeding home-prepared or raw, you may find more naturally occurring Omegas depending on your food choices and varieties. But you still may need supplementation if you are not achieving balance in your recipe.

    • See the many benefits of Omega 3

    • I recommend Nordic Naturals (Fullscript) or Omega Paws from Dr. Ruth Roberts at 150mg per kg (weight) per day.

  • Agilease and BLM from YL.

As Needed Relief

On the days that seem a little stiffer and slower, or after big physical exertion I turn to essential oils and homeopathy.

  • Consider Mtn Rose Arinca Oil for a good rub down after exercise. You can zhuzh up the oil with essential oils for a great massage.

  • Espom salt soaks with essential oils

  • Wintergreen Essential Oil - Joint Relief

  • Copaiba Essential Oils - Inflammation & Relief

  • Lemongrass Essential Oil — Ligaments

  • Marjoram Essential Oil — Muscles

  • Any of the big tree oils for topcial massage

  • Boswellia

Other Relief Methods:

  • Chiropractic Support

  • Acupuncture or Acupressure — look for a holistic vet that uses essential oils or will apply your oils to the needed in acupuncture.

  • Home Use Red Light, Cold Laser or Assissi Loop: https://www.amazon.com/shop/thek9coachcarolinas — see the joint health section.

  • CBD Oil — must be loaded and maintained daily. If find that CBD offers relief, but does nothing to help lubricate and/or slow the progression of deterioration. As such you may find that it works for a while and then does not. I prefer proactive support vs relief only.

  • PEMF Mats: Pulsating ElectroMagnetic Frequency
