How To Make An Herbal Tincture

You will need a glass jar and some cheap Vodka! Yes, it’s ok to use. You won’t be giving much. If you prefer not to use alcohol, you can use glycerin.

The general ratio is 20% herbs to the volume of alcohol. or 1:5 ratio. You will need 10mL of alcohol to 2g of fresh or dried herbs (or roots). So you can adjust as needed for the volume you wish to make.

Method for Herbal Tincture:

  • Add your herb(s) of choice to a small bottle. The amount of herbs you use should fill the jar about 1/2 way.

  • Then add your alcohol to fill the jar.

  • Place a piece of parchment paper over the mouth of the jar, and then cap the jar with a metal lid

  • Allow the tincture to infuse for 4-6 weeks, shaking daily for the first week, and then often each following week.

  • When you’re ready to strain, layer a few pieces of cheesecloth over the mouth of the jar and pour the tincture out into either a second clean jar or a large bowl.  Get as much alcohol out of the herbs as you can by gathering up the cheesecloth and squeezing strongly until most of the liquid is out of the herbs

  • Store your tincture in the clean glass jar with the tight fitting lid (I recommend placing a new piece of parchment paper between jar and lid for long term storage) or pour it into amber dropper bottles.

  • Label your tincture

  • Store the tincture in a cool, dark place
