How to Identify Synthetic Vitamins and Minerals in Dog Food
Trying to read a dog food label can feel like you need a nutrition degree, a magnifying glass, and possibly a snack.
You may recognize the first few ingredients — chicken, beef, turkey, peas, rice, sweet potatoes, salmon meal — and then suddenly the label turns into a chemistry quiz:
Thiamine mononitrate. Ferrous sulfate. Zinc oxide. Sodium selenite. Pyridoxine hydrochloride.
So what are those?
In many cases, they are added vitamins and minerals. Some are synthetic or isolated forms added after processing to help the food meet its required nutrient profile.
This article is not about whether synthetic vitamins and minerals are good or bad. I have a separate blog on why synthetic vitamins and minerals may do more harm than good.
This one is simply about how to spot them on the label.
Start With the Ingredient List
“The synergistic elements in whole foods as well as the vitamin complexes cannot be replicated in a factory. We, for all the advances of modern science, cannot build a natural vitamin or food. We must rely on sources of food grown under optimal conditions, with good soil, no chemical herbicides, fertilizers, or pesticides, and proper processing to preserve the inherent quality of these by foods.”
The ingredient list is your first clue.
Whole food nutrient sources usually look like actual food:
Beef
Turkey
Chicken
Eggs
Sardines
Liver
Heart
Kidney
Bone
Pumpkin
Spinach
Kale
Blueberries
Kelp
Seeds
Mussels
Synthetic or isolated nutrients usually sound more like chemistry class:
Thiamine mononitrate
Riboflavin supplement
Niacin supplement
Calcium pantothenate
Pyridoxine hydrochloride
Folic acid
Cyanocobalamin
Ascorbic acid
Vitamin D3 supplement
Ferrous sulfate
Zinc oxide
Zinc sulfate
Copper sulfate
Manganese sulfate
Sodium selenite
Calcium carbonate
Calcium phosphate
When you see a long list of these at the end of the ingredient panel, the food likely contains a vitamin and mineral premix.
What Is a Vitamin and Mineral Premix?
A vitamin and mineral premix is a blend of added nutrients used to help a food meet nutritional requirements.
This is common in many commercial dog foods, especially kibble and canned foods. You will usually find the premix near the end of the ingredient list.
That does not automatically tell you the food is “bad.” It tells you the food likely relies on added nutrients to meet the numbers on the label.
That is useful information when you are comparing foods.
Label Clues That Nutrients May Be Synthetic or Added
You may be looking at synthetic or isolated nutrients when you see words like:
Supplement
Sulfate
Oxide
Carbonate
Phosphate
Hydrochloride
Mononitrate
Selenite
Folic acid
Ascorbic acid
Cyanocobalamin
These are not whole food names. They are nutrient forms.
No need to panic and throw the bag across the room. That just makes a mess and your dog will still want dinner.
Just know what you are looking at.
Label Clues That Nutrients May Be Coming From Whole Foods
A food may rely more on whole food nutrient sources when you see ingredients such as:
Liver
Organ meats
Bone
Egg
Sardines
Mussels
Kelp
Pumpkin seeds
Leafy greens
Berries
Vegetables
Whole fish
Whole prey ingredients
Some brands may also use phrases like:
Whole food nutrients
Naturally occurring vitamins and minerals
Food-based vitamins and minerals
No synthetic vitamin or mineral premix
Nutrients from whole food ingredients
Still, read the full label. Marketing on the front of the bag can be adorable nonsense. The ingredient panel tells you more.
Common Synthetic Vitamin Names You May See
Vitamin A
May appear as: vitamin A supplement, retinyl acetate, or retinyl palmitate.
Whole food sources may include: liver, eggs, fish, and orange or green vegetables.
Vitamin D
May appear as: vitamin D3 supplement or cholecalciferol.
Whole food sources may include: fatty fish, egg yolks, and liver.
Vitamin E
May appear as: vitamin E supplement, dl-alpha tocopherol, or mixed tocopherols.
Whole food sources may include: seeds, eggs, leafy greens, and certain oils.
Vitamin K
May appear as: menadione or menadione sodium bisulfite complex.
Whole food sources may include: leafy greens, broccoli, and liver.
Vitamin B1
May appear as: thiamine mononitrate or thiamine hydrochloride.
Whole food sources may include: pork, organ meats, seeds, and other whole food ingredients.
Vitamin B2
May appear as: riboflavin supplement.
Whole food sources may include: meat, eggs, dairy when appropriate, and organ meats.
Vitamin B3
May appear as: niacin supplement, niacinamide, or nicotinic acid.
Whole food sources may include: chicken, turkey, fish, and meat.
Vitamin B5
May appear as: calcium pantothenate or pantothenic acid.
Whole food sources may include: liver, eggs, meat, and seeds.
Vitamin B6
May appear as: pyridoxine hydrochloride.
Whole food sources may include: fish, poultry, potatoes, and chickpeas.
Vitamin B7
May appear as: biotin.
Whole food sources may include: eggs, liver, meat, and seeds.
Vitamin B9
May appear as: folic acid.
Whole food sources may include: leafy greens, lentils, asparagus, and liver.
Vitamin B12
May appear as: cyanocobalamin or cobalamin supplement.
Whole food sources may include: beef, fish, eggs, and organ meats.
Vitamin C
May appear as: ascorbic acid, calcium ascorbate, or sodium ascorbate.
Whole food sources may include: berries, bell peppers, broccoli, and leafy greens.
Common Synthetic Mineral Names You May See
Calcium
May appear as: calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, dicalcium phosphate, or tricalcium phosphate.
Whole food sources may include: bone, eggshell calcium, sardines with bones, and carefully balanced fresh food recipes.
Iron
May appear as: ferrous sulfate, iron proteinate, or iron amino acid chelate.
Whole food sources may include: red meat, liver, organ meats, and some leafy greens.
Zinc
May appear as: zinc oxide, zinc sulfate, zinc proteinate, or zinc amino acid chelate.
Whole food sources may include: beef, oysters, eggs, and pumpkin seeds.
Copper
May appear as: copper sulfate, copper proteinate, or copper amino acid chelate.
Whole food sources may include: liver, shellfish, seeds, and organ meats.
Manganese
May appear as: manganese sulfate, manganese oxide, or manganese proteinate.
Whole food sources may include: mussels, seeds, leafy greens, and whole food mineral sources.
Selenium
May appear as: sodium selenite, selenium yeast, or sodium selenate.
Whole food sources may include: fish, eggs, meat, and some seeds or nuts.
Iodine
May appear as: calcium iodate or potassium iodide.
Whole food sources may include: kelp, seaweed, and fish.
What About Chelated Minerals?
You may also see minerals listed as:
Zinc proteinate
Copper proteinate
Iron proteinate
Manganese proteinate
Zinc amino acid chelate
Copper amino acid chelate
Chelated minerals are minerals bound to amino acids or proteins. They are still added mineral forms, but they may be listed differently than basic sulfate or oxide forms.
So if your goal is simply to identify whether the food has added minerals, these still count as added minerals.
Quick Label Reading Shortcut
When you look at your dog’s food label, ask:
Do the nutrients mostly come from recognizable food ingredients?
Is there a long vitamin and mineral premix at the end?
Are the minerals listed as sulfates, oxides, carbonates, phosphates, or chelates?
Are the vitamins listed as supplements, hydrochlorides, mononitrates, folic acid, or ascorbic acid?
Does the company explain where its nutrients come from?
Does the food say it uses whole food nutrients or no synthetic premix?
This does not give you the entire answer, but it gives you a much better starting point.
Questions to Ask the Manufacturer
If the label is not clear, contact the company and ask:
Do you use a vitamin and mineral premix?
Are your vitamins synthetic, food-based, or naturally occurring from the ingredients?
Which nutrients are added after processing?
Are your minerals chelated?
Do you use sodium selenite or selenium yeast?
Do you use menadione as a vitamin K source?
Can you provide a full nutrient analysis?
Can you provide calcium, phosphorus, copper, sodium, zinc, iodine, and vitamin D levels?
A good company should be able to answer basic sourcing and nutrient questions.
If they cannot answer, that is also an answer.
