C60 for Dogs: Purple Power Benefits, Safety & Research
C60 for dogs is one of the more unusual antioxidants in my wellness toolbox.
It isn't an herb, vitamin, mushroom or essential oil. C60 — also called Carbon 60, fullerene or buckminsterfullerene — is a molecule made entirely of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a hollow sphere.
Its ability to interact with reactive oxygen species is why C60 has generated so much interest as a potential antioxidant.
I use C60 Purple Power as one antioxidant option with selected dogs, particularly when I'm thinking about oxidative stress, inflammation, recovery and healthy aging.
But C60 has also acquired some spectacular internet claims, including everything from curing disease to dramatically extending lifespan.
Some of the research is genuinely interesting. Some of the marketing is several laps ahead of the dog research.
What Is C60 Purple Power for Dogs?
C60 Purple Power is an oil-based Carbon 60 supplement marketed for people and pets.
The pet products combine highly purified C60 with carrier oils such as organic avocado, olive or MCT coconut oil.
C60 is being investigated primarily because of its unusual redox properties and its ability to interact with free radicals associated with oxidative stress.
That's why I think of it first as an antioxidant and cellular-support tool — not a treatment for a particular disease.
What Exactly Is Carbon 60?
C60 is a form of carbon known as a fullerene.
Picture a microscopic soccer ball made entirely from carbon atoms.
That unusual spherical structure is part of what allows C60 to interact with reactive molecules and is why it has attracted attention in fields ranging from nanotechnology to medicine.
You may also see C60 called:
- Carbon 60
- Fullerene C60
- Buckminsterfullerene
- Buckyball
They are referring to the same basic carbon structure.
What Does C60 Do for Dogs?
This is where I separate what C60 may do biologically from the enormous list of diseases people claim it treats.
The primary reason I consider C60 is its relationship with oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress occurs when production of reactive oxygen species outpaces the body's ability to control them.
Some oxidative activity is normal and necessary. The problem is excessive oxidative stress over time.
That can become more relevant with:
- Aging
- Chronic inflammation
- Illness
- Environmental exposure
- Heavy exercise or physical stress
- Poor nutrition
- Recovery from injury or surgery
Antioxidant Support
C60 has demonstrated free-radical-scavenging activity in experimental research.
This is the main reason it interests me as part of an antioxidant strategy.
Inflammatory Balance
Experimental research has also found effects on inflammatory markers and inflammatory signaling.
That does not make C60 an anti-inflammatory drug, but it gives us another biologically plausible area of interest.
Healthy Aging
Oxidative stress increases with aging, which is why antioxidant support becomes particularly interesting to me with senior dogs.
I use C60 as one potential longevity-support tool — not because it has been proven to make dogs live twice as long.
Recovery + Resilience
Illness, surgery, intense activity and chronic disease can all increase metabolic demand.
That may be another time I consider broader antioxidant support.
Has C60 Actually Been Studied in Dogs?
Yes — but not nearly as extensively as the marketing sometimes suggests.
A published study evaluated C60 dissolved in grapeseed oil in six healthy beagles.
The dogs received C60-oil for nine days, and researchers measured blood levels of C-reactive protein, or CRP, a marker associated with inflammation.
The dogs' CRP levels declined during the study.
That's Interesting Canine Evidence — With Limits
I think the beagle study is worth knowing about because we don't have to extrapolate absolutely everything from mice or rats.
But let's keep it in perspective:
- There were only six dogs.
- The study lasted only nine days.
- The dogs were not being treated for arthritis, cancer, allergies or another clinical disease.
- The study measured CRP, not lifespan or long-term health outcomes.
Promising is not the same word as proven.
Does C60 Reduce Inflammation in Dogs?
The beagle research gives us some direct evidence that C60-oil can affect an inflammatory marker in dogs.
Researchers also found antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory testing involving C60.
That is enough for me to consider C60 interesting for dogs dealing with increased oxidative or inflammatory burden.
It is not enough for me to claim:
- C60 cures arthritis;
- C60 cures allergies;
- C60 cures cancer;
- C60 replaces pain medication;
- C60 fixes every inflammatory disease.
Inflammation itself also has causes.
Food, body weight, gut health, environmental exposure, disease, stress and activity can all be part of the picture.
C60 for Senior Dogs
This is probably where C60 makes the most intuitive sense in my own work.
As dogs age, I'm increasingly thinking about:
- Oxidative stress
- Inflammatory burden
- Brain health
- Muscle and mobility
- Recovery
- Immune resilience
- Cellular energy
That doesn't mean my senior-dog plan starts with C60.
Food still comes first.
I want adequate high-quality protein, healthy fats, omega-3s, moisture, appropriate calories, antioxidants from food and support for whatever health issues the senior actually has.
C60 may then become one of the additional tools I rotate or layer into that foundation.

Can C60 Help a Tired Senior Dog?
This is an interesting search bringing people to this page.
Purple Power users frequently report changes in energy, and the company markets C60 for energy and vitality support.
But if your older dog has suddenly become tired, weak or exercise-intolerant, I do not want C60 to become our diagnosis.
Senior-dog fatigue can be related to:
- Pain
- Loss of muscle
- Anemia
- Heart disease
- Endocrine disease
- Kidney or liver disease
- Infection
- Cancer
- Medication effects
- Inadequate nutrition
There is a big difference between:
“My healthy 12-year-old seems to have a little more pep with this antioxidant strategy.”
and:
“My 12-year-old can suddenly barely walk around the block.”
The second dog needs us to find out what's going on.
Does C60 Make Dogs Live Longer?
This is where the C60 story gets particularly interesting — and particularly easy to exaggerate.
A well-known 2012 rat study reported dramatically longer lifespan in rats receiving C60 dissolved in olive oil.
Understandably, that study created enormous interest in C60 and longevity.
But subsequent research has not consistently reproduced a lifespan-extending effect, and the original research was performed in rats — not dogs.
I Use C60 for Longevity Support. I Don't Promise Longevity From C60.
There is a difference.
Reducing oxidative stress is a perfectly reasonable part of a proactive aging strategy.
Claiming that C60 has been proven to dramatically extend a dog's lifespan is not supported by the evidence we currently have.
If I want my dogs to live longer, C60 sits behind much larger priorities:
- Fresh food
- Healthy body weight
- Muscle maintenance
- Movement
- Gut health
- Low-tox living
- Omega-3s
- Good sleep
- Appropriate medical screening
- Then targeted supplements
Is C60 Safe for Dogs?
Available research suggests purified C60 can have relatively low acute toxicity in several experimental models, and the small canine study did not report a short-term toxicity problem during its nine-day protocol.
But there is an important missing piece:
We do not have robust controlled studies demonstrating the safety of daily C60 supplementation in dogs over years.
So if you're searching:
“Is C60 safe for dogs long term?”
my answer is:
We don't have enough long-term canine research to say that has been conclusively proven.
That does not mean we have evidence showing properly manufactured C60 is dangerous when used long term.
It means the data aren't there yet.
Quality Matters A LOT With C60
This is one supplement where I would not buy the cheapest mystery bottle I could find online.
C60 is an engineered carbon material, and research examining commercially available C60-oil preparations has found significant differences between products in concentration and impurities.
Manufacturing, purification and storage matter.

I prefer to start with the instructions for the actual pet product rather than borrowing human directions.
At the time this article was updated, C60 Power's current avocado-oil pet label lists:
- 0–25 lb: ¼ teaspoon daily
- 26–50 lb: ½ teaspoon daily
- 50–100 lb: 1 teaspoon daily
- 100+ lb: approximately 1 teaspoon per 100 lb
I Still Prefer to Introduce It Rather Than Cannonball Into It
Even when a label gives a full serving size, I generally prefer to introduce a new supplement gradually and watch the individual dog.
Especially with a senior, medically complicated dog or a dog already getting multiple supplements.
And remember: C60 is dissolved in oil.
The carrier oil contributes calories and fat too.
What Should I Watch for When Starting C60?
Any time I add something new, I want to know whether it is actually helping.
I may watch:
- Energy
- Comfort and mobility
- Appetite
- Stool and digestion
- Skin or allergy patterns
- Recovery after activity
- Overall behavior and engagement
And if nothing changes?
I don't keep supplements around simply because they have impressive chemistry.
Can Dogs With Pancreatitis Use C60 Oil?
This deserves special consideration because C60 supplements are delivered in oil.
A dog with a history of pancreatitis, significant fat intolerance or a medically prescribed fat-restricted diet shouldn't have extra oil casually added without accounting for it.
The issue may not even be the C60 molecule itself.
The carrier oil is still dietary fat.
That needs to be considered in the dog's total diet.
What About C60 for Dogs With Cancer?
Oxidative stress, inflammation and cellular health are obviously relevant conversations in cancer.
But I don't describe C60 as a cancer treatment.
And if a dog is actively receiving chemotherapy or radiation, I want antioxidant supplementation reviewed as part of the complete oncology plan rather than indiscriminately layering antioxidants onto treatment.
My approach to cancer support is much broader:
- Fresh-food nutrition
- Maintaining muscle and healthy weight
- Omega-3s
- Medicinal mushrooms
- Gut and liver support
- Reducing unnecessary environmental load
- Targeted herbs and supplements
- Quality of life

C60 vs. Food-Based Antioxidants
I don't consider this an either/or decision.
Before I ever get excited about a fancy antioxidant supplement, I want antioxidants coming through the diet.
That can include foods and nutrients such as:
- Blueberries and other deeply colored berries
- Leafy greens
- Cruciferous vegetables
- Vitamin E
- Vitamin C-rich foods
- Carotenoids
- Polyphenols
- Omega-3 fatty acids
C60 can then be an additional targeted antioxidant tool.

I use Purple Power.
I like having different antioxidant tools available so I'm not relying on one supplement every day for every dog.
But I don't want C60 becoming the newest answer to everything.
If you're feeding highly processed food, your overweight senior barely moves, the gut is a mess and inflammation is running wild, C60 is not the first thing I'm excited about fixing.
Feed better.
Get the dog moving appropriately.
Support healthy weight and muscle.
Pay attention to the gut.
Reduce the junk coming into the body.
Then we can decide whether C60, NingXia Red, berries, CoQ10, mushrooms or another antioxidant tool has a useful place.
The supplement should support the foundation. It shouldn't become the foundation.
