Hematomas In Dogs

Healing Hematomas in Dogs

Hematomas in dogs can be a distressing sight for pet owners, but the good news is that there are natural remedies that can aid in their resolution.

Most hematomas will resolve on their own – though it may take several weeks to do so. This can lead to reinjuring the ear in daily life or just general shaking of the ears!

Hematomas in dogs occur when blood accumulates outside blood vessels, typically forming a pocket of blood under the skin. This often happens due to trauma or injury, such as a vigorous head shake, scratching, or ear infection. The most common site for hematomas is the ear flap.

Natural Hematoma Remedies:

  1. Warm Compresses: Applying warm compresses to the affected area can promote blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and accelerate the absorption of the accumulated blood. The warmth helps to relax the blood vessels, facilitating the reabsorption of the hematoma.

  2. Arnica Homeopathy: Arnica, a well-known homeopathic remedy, is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties that can aid in reducing swelling and bruising. Administering arnica in low dilutions as directed by a veterinarian may help speed up the healing process.

  3. Helichrysum Essential Oil: Known for its anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties, helichrysum essential oil can be diluted and applied topically to the hematoma. Its ability to promote tissue healing and reduce inflammation makes it a valuable addition to the natural healing arsenal. Helichrysum is highly adaptogenic to blood, healing, and regenerative.

  4. Taping or Wrapping the Ear: To prevent further trauma and shaking, gently taping or wrapping the affected ear can be beneficial. This method immobilizes the ear, reducing the risk of additional blood vessel damage and allowing the hematoma to heal undisturbed.

  5. Yunnan Baiyao: Yunnan Baiyao, a traditional Chinese herbal remedy, is thought to have hemostatic properties. Administered in powder form or capsules, it may help control bleeding and promote healing. However, it’s crucial to consult with a veterinarian before using herbal supplements.

Surgical Intervention: While natural remedies can be effective, there are cases where surgical intervention may be necessary, especially if the hematoma is extensive or has a high risk of recurrence. Surgical drainage and diagnosis of the underlying cause, such as ear infections may be necessary.

Remember following any surgical procedure, consider anesthesia clearing protocols, detox, etc. And then to begin the natural remedies above for complete healing. You also have a choice for natural antibiotics following procedures like this.

If the hematoma occurred as a result of an ear infection – let’s talk about your dog’s diet.
