Carrier Oils For Essential Oils
Carrier oils help dilute an essential oil. They are great for spicy or hot oils or to use as a base for lotions and serums
There are dozens of Carriers and it is a good idea to try a few to find out which ones you like. Look for organic, cold pressed, pure, and unrefined Carrier oils.
Some of the most common ones to start out with are:
Grapeseed
Coconut
Sweet Almond
Rosehip Seed
Jojoba -- not for use where ingestion may be possible
CARRIER OILS
Carrier oils are base oils used when you want to dilute essential oils. Their properties should not be overlooked as their molecular makeup is as diverse as the essential oils used with them. People often make the mistake of using only fractionated coconut oil for its ease of use and long shelf life. The reality is, there are so many more benefits when you pair the correct carrier oils together with essential oils. When choosing a carrier oil, look for ones that are pure, raw, organic, cold pressed, and unrefined when possible.
A good online resource is Dr. Adorable.
Note: Carrier oils last for only 3-6 months unrefrigerated or 12-24 months when refrigerated. To check if a carrier has gone rancid, simply smell it. If it smells off it is most likely bad. Often dermal rashes happen from allergic reactions to carriers and not the essential oils themselves. Note any nut allergies. Almond oil and coconut oil can cause allergic reactions.
