Salt Factor

Read the label and see where exactly salt shows up.

We know a couple of facts about labels on dog food:

1) Ingredients are listed in descending order.

2) We know that a manufacturer can put no more than 1% salt into the bag of kibble.

Now let’s see what comes after salt. Fruit? Veggies? Vitamins?

Because they follow salt on the label you know that those ingredients are <1% of the total recipe or portion of food. That may mean they wave a blueberry at the bag and call it a day. It’s probably not much benefit to the diet at all. But it sure does sound good in marketing.

Sodium in food has it place. Like you and I, dogs need sodium for fluid balance & proper cell functions. Sodium is typically low, between 0.25g/100g and 1.5g/100g. If your dog has kidney issues, heart health problems, liver disease, s/he may require a low sodium diet.
